It's wintertime, which means all of our furnaces are keeping us warm and toasty. But have you ever thought about which level of air filter you use? You might have seen MERV written on the filter. But what does MERV stand for, and what does this mean for you?
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, a concept developed by ASHRAE, the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioner Engineers.
MERV values will range from 1 to 16. The higher the MERV value, the more precise the filter will be at trapping airborne particles.
A MERV 5 or MERV 8 filter is suitable for removing most pollen, mold spores, and dust mites.
Suppose you suffer from allergies, asthma, or other respiratory conditions. In that case, you should use a filter with a MERV rating ranging from 10 through 12.
