The acronym HEPA stands for "high-efficiency particulate air filter" (as defined by the Department of Energy). 

Filters of this type can remove at least 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and other airborne particles smaller than 0.3 microns (m).

HEPA filters are found in applications such as the manufacture of hard disk drives, medical devices, semiconductors, nuclear, food, and pharmaceutical products, as well as in homes, hospitals, and vehicles.
