As the cold continues to rip through Northeast Ohio or wherever you're currently located, it might be time to check your furnace filter. How do you know when it's time to change your filter?
Not everyone has the same furnace, and not everyone has access to it. The first thing anyone should do is look at the filter and determine whether or not it's time to change it.
Some modern furnaces have built-in mechanisms to alert you when it's time to change your filter. Other people have thermostats that will send you notifications to change your filter. Some of these devices are based on time, while others are based on airflow.
The first thing you should always do is go and check your filter. You can also try listening to your furnace. Is your furnace running longer than usual? This could mean airflow is not correctly getting distributed around your home.
For those of us with AC units, a clogged filter in the summer will restrict airflow to the point that your coil will freeze up. Another indication of a filter that needs to be replaced in your AC unit is if the unit stops working.
Regardless of furnace type, the rule of thumb is to check your filter at least three months at a time to ensure proper air quality and airflow.
