Border Crossing Secures Filtration Solution for Desert Environment

When a supplier of backup power systems needed a filtration solution that could withstand the sands of Egypt, Duraflow Industries delivered. The customer, a provider of industrial and commercial generators, needed intake filters for diesel-powered generator sets. These gensets were deployed at a border crossing in Egypt where blowing sand is problematic, but optimum airflow is required because of the heat.

Duraflow Industries didn't just make intake filters that provided cooling and prevented clogging. From its headquarters near Cleveland, Ohio (USA), Duraflow met the demands of a global supply chain. The long-lasting intake filters that Duraflow made also support regular cleaning. Desert temperatures can rise and fall, so Duraflow used quality metals that won't expand, contract, and complicate maintenance.

Border Crossing Secures Filtration Solution for Desert Environment

Striking the Right Balance

In desert environments, the intake filters for gensets need to block small particles of sand. These particles are of a known size, but can be as small 100 microns. If the openings in the filter media are too large, blowing sand can pass-through the intake filter and reach the air filter for the genset's diesel engine. The clogging that results can reduce performance and even cause engine failure.

If the openings in the filter media are too small, however, the intake filter won't admit enough air. Since diesel engines are throttled by varying the air-to-fuel ratio, too little airflow causes fuel economy to suffer. To help optimize genset performance, Duraflow Industries struck the right balance between air restriction and airflow. By leveraging the power of its supplier network, Duraflow sourced the right-sized filter media.

Duraflow also recommended the right materials for a desert environment. Metals have different rates of thermal expansion, so it's important to choose materials that won't expand so much that a frame is hard to remove. Gensets also need filter frames that fit the cut-outs in enclosures like shipping containers. The solutions that Duraflow delivered made it easy to shake-out the sand and re-install the intake filters.

Large Sizes, Distant Supply Chains

Large Sizes, Distant Supply ChainsThe genset intake filters that Duraflow manufactured were relatively large at 2 ft. x 4 ft. As the customer explained, each enclosure needed four of them to filter approximately 32 sq. ft. of inlet area. The project's challenges didn't end there, however. The supplier of backup power systems was based in the United States, but some assembly would occur in Ireland. The job site in Egypt would need direct shipments, too.

Duraflow Industries met these supply chain challenges with its portfolio of shipping solutions. Depending on the due dates, Duraflow ships genset intake filters by air freight or by sea. The filtration solutions that Duraflow delivered may have cost more than some other products, but they met all of the application requirements when no one else could - and in one of the world's most demanding environments.
